About ...me

My journey started in the U.S. and now I walk, drive, ride, fly, live, teach, and interpret throughout Europe. I authored and helped establish the first complete interpreting degree program in the Czech Republic. I am a working interpreter of ASL/ČZJ/IS and English. I have been involved in interpreting and the Deaf community for ...umm... let's just say over 20 years.

Education

ACADEMIC

  • 1992 B.S. Astrophysics
  • 2002 A.A. American Sign Language
  • 2002 A.A.S ASL/English Interpreting
  • 2013 M.S. Interpreting Pedagogy

CONTINUING

I can be seen regularly continuing my education in workshops, self-study, and conferences, even at the cost of needed sleep. (Stupid time zones.)

Professional

Life is a grand adventure. Our paths twist and turn and always finds us where we are.

INTERPRETING

When I am interpreting, my working languages are ASL, ČZJ, ‘IS’, and English.

I have interpreted in over 18 countries mostly in Europe,… good times, good times. My interpreting experience in the US was in the community, working in the fields of medical, legal, lower and higher education, artistic, business, government, conference, online, and religious. In Europe, my experience has focused much more on conferences, workshops, business, international project meetings, higher education, artistic, and entertainment events.

TEACHING

I authored and developed curricula for the first full signed language interpreting degree programs in the Czech Republic. I taught at and was the Department Head of one of these programs for 3 years. I present workshops for interpreters in the Czech Republic and beyond.

Community

I am a certified member of The Registry of Interpreters for the Deaf (RID) in the U.S.A. I am a member of the Chamber of Czech Sign Language Interpreters of the Deaf  (CKTZJ). I regularly attend meetings of the European Forum of Sign Language Interpreters (efsli). I am a former member of the Oklahoma RID branch. I frequently join formal and informal gatherings of the Deaf community and interpreter community.

I have written many articles for publications for magazines in the Czech Deaf and interpreting communities. I am the former editor of the efsli newsletter.

…and life keeps going….

Personal

I am an American living in the Czech Republic.

I have a wife and daughter.

I love reading, writing, playing games, watching shows, movies, and being with friends and family.

What did you expect me to write? My deepest darkest personal feelings? Please…

Surprising

I’ve been playing the world’s most popular role-playing game since…well before it became cool to play. That’s Dungeons & Dragons, for those of you who do not know.

I have interviewed a well-known astronaut on live TV.

And….I’ll save the rest for when we meet.
